Tempel

Origin of dreadlock hair

Hair from India is offered in one of the largest temples in the world, located in Tirumala. The temple complex in southern India attracts millions of pilgrims annually. For Hindus, this temple complex holds the same status as Mecca for Muslims and the Vatican for Catholics. Every day, the temple welcomes 50,000 to 100,000 visitors, among whom thousands of women offer their hair. This hair is then sold by the temples to hair extension manufacturers.

The pilgrims shave their heads to become pure and blessed, as well as to express their gratitude for life. The temple uses the proceeds from the hair for temple maintenance and local projects, such as building schools and hospitals. Additionally, the temple provides free accommodation and meals to the pilgrims and operates hospitals and schools that pilgrims can use free of charge.
